Event Overview
Backroads Gravel Ride is held in the Shire of Chapman Valley, with riders starting and finishing in the small town of Nabawa, about 25 minutes east of Geraldton. The 2026 edition takes place on 8 August and offers five ride distances: 160km, 100km, 65km, 20km and 10km. The cycling event is sanctioned through AusCycling, and rider licensing is required for participation under the event’s stated options.
What the Course Demands
Across the longer routes, the course is built around sustained efforts over rolling terrain with notable climbing. The 160km option is described as having over 1,200m of climbing and includes a late-course feature at around 138km (“Ward’s Wall”), while the 100km route lists 950m of climbing and also includes that ascent. Some routes mention water crossings and sections through private farmland, which can add variability to pacing and equipment choices.
Who This Event Suits Best
This event suits cyclists who want a structured long ride with a choice of distances, from a short 10km option aimed at children (8+), through to a 160km endurance challenge. The 20km loop is positioned for novice riders, while the mid and long distances better match riders comfortable with sustained climbing and managing effort over several hours, including a decisive climb late in the longer course.
