How to Convert Miles to km Without a Calculator

The exact conversion factor of 1.609344 is hard to work with mentally. There are two practical shortcuts:

Quick approximation (multiply by 1.6): For every mile, add 60% of the distance. So 10 miles → 10 + 6 = 16 km. This is accurate to within 0.4% — close enough for almost all practical purposes.

The Fibonacci method (surprisingly accurate): The Fibonacci sequence — 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144 — produces an almost perfect miles-to-km conversion. Any Fibonacci number of miles equals approximately the next Fibonacci number in kilometres. So: 5 miles ≈ 8 km, 8 miles ≈ 13 km, 13 miles ≈ 21 km, 21 miles ≈ 34 km. This works because the ratio between adjacent Fibonacci numbers (1.618) is close to the mile-to-km conversion factor (1.609). The accuracy improves as the numbers get larger.

The Fibonacci trick produces a memorable insight for runners: the common race distances in miles and kilometres are themselves adjacent Fibonacci numbers — a 5K (≈3.1 miles) ≈ 5 miles, a 10K (6.2 miles) ≈ 8 miles, a half marathon (13.1 miles) ≈ 13 miles, a marathon (26.2 miles) ≈ 34 km… the distances weren’t designed this way, but the mathematical coincidence holds remarkably well.

For runners, the most practical application of the miles-to-km conversion is pace. Training plans and race targets are sometimes expressed in min/mile (common in the US and UK) and sometimes in min/km (standard in Australia and most of the world). Converting between them uses the same 1.609344 factor.
